Acidosis

Propionibacterium freudenreichii P63

  • P. freudenreichii is a lactate utilizer.
  • P. freudenreichii strain P63 was selected at Oklahoma State University as the strain that most efficiently utilized lactate in the rumen.
  • The utilization of lactate in the rumen help to prevent severe depressions in ruminal pH thus helping to reduce incidence of acidosis.
  • P. freudenreichii converts lactate to propionate which is the volatile fatty acid that provides the greatest amount of energy when absorbed by the ruminant.
  • All of these effects result in increased conversion of feed to pounds of gain.
